The leaders markets are listening to: Part 2 of 6 - Insight
Description
An article by Eric Doyle (F.ISP) of Consult Crux, the second in a series on the five pillars of Modern Commercial Leadership. It argues that leadership visibility on digital channels, what the author calls “leadership signal” is an underused commercial asset. Where leadership influence was once constrained by geography and access (meetings, conferences, trade publications, referrals), digital channels now allow leadership teams to communicate directly into their markets in real time.

The article makes the case that clients, prospects, recruits, investors and competitors form opinions long before any first meeting, based on who explains change clearly, demonstrates sector understanding, and contributes useful context. Consistent, intelligent commercial thinking builds market familiarity, which in turn generates interest and connection. It sets out four commercial effects: prospects feel closer to organisations whose leaders are visibly present; employees feel better informed and more connected; recruitment improves as talent gravitates towards visibly communicative organisations (illustrated with an anecdote about a teenager choosing an employer on the strength of its CEO’s social media presence); and competitive positioning shifts, as organisations that shape sector understanding become reference points whose language and framing influence industry discussion.

The author is clear that leadership signal comes from quality, consistency, relevance and visible expertise rather than volume or self-promotion, and identifies “the gap” most leadership teams already hold the necessary experience and market understanding, but little of that thinking is visible beyond internal communication and existing relationships. Aimed at senior sales and commercial leaders. Conceptual and reflective in nature rather than tool-based; no templates or exercises are included.
