Video Summary
This webinar, hosted by the Institute of Sales Professionals, was the fourth in a six-part series on mental toughness led by John Tunstall and Doug Straharczyk. The session focused on the “control” element of mental toughness and how it applies to sales performance, resilience, and wellbeing. Doug explained that mental toughness is a psychological concept with strong academic evidence, helping to explain why people respond differently to stress, pressure, opportunity, and challenge. He revisited the four core “C’s” of mental toughness: control, commitment, challenge, and confidence. Within control, he broke it into two parts: life control and emotional control. Life control refers to a person’s sense of self-worth and belief that they can manage their circumstances and get things done. In sales, this shows up as a can-do attitude, good prioritization, planning, multitasking, and persistence. Emotional control is the ability to manage emotional reactions under pressure, stay calm, avoid being provoked, and maintain poise in difficult conversations or negotiations. John translated these ideas into a sales context, emphasizing that control helps salespeople manage multiple client relationships, complex projects, and different stakeholder emotions at once. He also linked emotional control to influencing buying decisions and handling confrontation. The session included practical advice on developing control through self-awareness, reflection, breathing techniques, muscular relaxation, and visualization. Doug stressed that improvement is possible, but only if the individual wants to change and sees the benefit. The webinar ended by previewing the next session, which will focus on commitment, especially goal orientation and achievement in sales.
