Pdf Summary
The article argues that many B2B firms selling complex services lack a clear, shared understanding of how their commercial system works. In particular, they often confuse three distinct elements: commercial approach, sales methodology, and sales process. This confusion is not just semantic; it makes it difficult to train sales teams, diagnose performance problems, and scale effective practices.

Based on research across fourteen UK consulting firms, the author identifies two major gaps. First, value propositions are often too firm-centric. They emphasize internal capabilities such as experience, certifications, global reach, and proprietary frameworks, but fail to make the client’s problem, decision context, and evaluation criteria central. As a result, buyers struggle to see relevance or differentiate between providers.

Second, firms often use methodology labels like Consultative Selling, Challenger, or MEDDIC without clearly understanding what these terms mean, when they apply, or what their limitations are. The article distinguishes:
- Commercial approach: the stable philosophy and principles behind selling
- Sales methodology: a structured framework with steps, tools, and criteria
- Sales process: the operational flow from lead to close

The proposed solution is a “professional sales engine” built on coherent flexibility: keep the commercial approach stable, but adapt methodologies and processes to fit the situation. Practical recommendations include getting executives into real client discovery conversations, ensuring value propositions answer key buyer questions, and explicitly defining methodologies, their limits, and their use cases.

The main message is that sales clarity is a competitive advantage. Firms that can systematically explain why they sell the way they do—and adapt intelligently by context—will outperform those relying only on instinct.
