Video Summary
Sales trainer Greg Barnes distinguishes objections from conditions. A condition is a valid reason someone cannot or will not buy at that time, so it cannot be overcome; an objection is usually a concern, perception, or excuse that may be resolved. Common objections include “it’s too expensive,” “I wouldn’t use it,” and “I want to think about it.” Salespeople must learn to identify which they are hearing rather than reflexively reciting a rebuttal. Barnes describes three ways to handle objections, in order of preference: address likely concerns in the presentation before they arise; briefly ignore or deflect minor objections early on, revisiting them if they persist; or use a rebuttal. Before rebutting, he recommends acknowledging the concern, restating it in less severe terms, isolating it by checking whether anything else is holding the prospect back, and confirming that resolving it would allow the sale to proceed. Only then should the salesperson offer an appropriate response. These skills require repeated practice. The goal is to listen, understand the prospect’s real concern, and seek a clear yes or no rather than pressuring them or relying on generic scripts.
