Video Summary
The speaker explains that territory design is a strategic foundation for business growth, not just an administrative exercise. He argues that organizations should use data analytics to review how territories, accounts, channels, and teams are structured in order to improve next year’s results.

At the macro level, leaders must consider resources, product and service life cycles, economic conditions, shareholder expectations, channel and distribution models, and organizational structure. He stresses that growth is the central expectation, even when resources are limited. He also highlights the importance of balancing high performers and high-potential employees, maintaining a strong hiring pipeline, and using partners, alliances, and channel managers to expand coverage.

On the market side, territory design should reflect product life cycle stages, competitor activity, and market share opportunities. He recommends thinking about how to place products and sales effort when competitors are in maturity and how to protect installed bases. He also discusses span of control, support functions like sales operations and enablement, and the value of inside sales and telesales for certain types of accounts.

At the micro level, reps should focus on increasing customer engagement, finding new opportunities, understanding customer types, mapping accounts to customer organizations, and identifying share of wallet, propensity to buy, and customer direction. He strongly emphasizes that reps often gravitate to easy, established accounts, so territory redesign may require splitting territories to create more focus and uncover underpenetrated opportunities.

Finally, he insists that alignment is useless without measurement. Key metrics include meetings, proposals, forecast coverage, relationships built, cross-sell, and margin. Territory plans must be reviewed regularly and not left unused.
